Pompeii of the East

Jerash, one of the world’s most complete and best-preserved Roman cities, is often called the Pompeii of the East. Settled as early as the Neolithic period, Jerash flourished under Roman rule, becoming part of the Decapolis. By the 3rd century, it was a thriving metropolis with colonnaded avenues, majestic temples, and grand theaters. Abandoned after a devastating earthquake and hidden for centuries under sand, it was rediscovered in the 19th century. Today, walking through Jerash feels like stepping back 2,000 years, where chariot races and gladiator games once entertained Roman citizens.
